USA Nordic Awards here in the East

2021-22 USANS Awards:

Todd Einig – Nordic Combined/Ski Jumping Development Coach of the Year

Vermont ski jumping coach and program leader Todd Einig was awarded U.S. Ski and Snowboard’s Nordic Combined/Ski Jumping Development Coach of the Year Award. Einig has been instrumental in developing a junior ski jumping program at Harris Hill, which just celebrated its 100th year of holding an annual tournament.

While Harris Hill has long been a major ski jumping center in New England, it had lacked a junior jumping program. Einig has been transformational for the sport, spearheading the construction of 10m and 18m jumps at Memorial Park and organizing training for young jumpers from five to 15 years old beginning in 2018.

Einig has built a comprehensive program that includes fall training in the gym and on a roller jump to prepare athletes for the season. He wears many hats for the program, including coach as well as chief of competition for the annual Harris Hill tournament. He also volunteers for major events around the region, including Lake Placid.

2020 USANS Awards:

Ptarmigan: Scott Halvorson

For over three years, Scott Halvorson has pursued re-opening Big Nansen Ski Jump in Milan, NH. Scott has visited most Eastern Ski Jump Venues and has travelled to many venues outside the Eastern division to gather as much information and insight as he can. Scott has held numerous meetings with NH political and bureaucratic leaders to obtain necessary permissions and funding, while also reaching out out to private donors. He helped host winter carnival events at Big Nansen to prime the pump for future public events and has now begun active management of ongoing engineering and construction at Big Nansen in preparation for a meet in 2021. Scott’s boundless energy and enthusiasm has been a primary driver for waking the Sleeping Giant. It is not possible to know how much time Scott has dedicated to restarting jumping at Big Nansen, but it must be nearly a full-time job. Importantly, Scott has also endeavored to meet and learn from as many people in the ski jumping community as possible throughout this projects life. Scott’s effort to make those connections has been instrumental in his success at Big Nansen.

2019 USANS AWARDS

USA Nordic Club Leader of Year: Cheryl Tourville

The USA Nordic Club Leader of the Year went to Cheryl Tourville. As Vice President of the Lebanon Outing Club, Cheryl supports the President and Board of Directors to ensure that Storrs Hill Ski Area is running smoothly. One of her key responsibilities is to help oversee the funding of the non-profit organization. Cheryl researches and applies for grants, a rigorous and time-consuming process. She secured the funding, which made it possible for the Lebanon Outing Club to upgrade their 25m jump (K25) and 50m jump (K50) with stainless steel tracks in 2017.

As the “Jump Team mom,” Cheryl helps keep the ski jumping team organized. She travels to ski jumping competitions, makes sure that all the kids have transportation, and often serves as the team’s photographer. Cheryl works closely with her husband, Coach Ed, and with Stephanie Vallee, the nordic coordinator/board member.

Cheryl is also an active member of the USA Nordic Membership committee and is amazing at communicating USANS initiatives to her club. She also contributed greatly to this year’s Story Project.
